You can look for a meaning In the arrangement of stars And the light they burned so long ago You can summon vibrations From all the sticks and the stones For all the good that it might do you But if you want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans Don't you know that there's no way you could understand Cos if everything you build is made of sand Don't you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans You can dream of a lifetime With a hope for control Holding strings you can pull freely But don't you break for an instant From your love for the world Holding out for something better
2.
look to the east when the dawn comes a spirit released as the sky hums if you count on repeats of the motion you're never alone when you're pulled into view, into orbit you can start it anew like a portrait the painter is you, grey and scarlet with all that you are, and you're longing for now you awaken, silver light is shining down on you with a phantom of a puncher's chance to start anew the sky is clearing and the wind is right now at your back for the moment no one is promised has to come to you at last look to the west as the night falls it's all for the best is what they call accepting defeat when it's wise to beat a hasty retreat when you're down on a knee and exalting your vision is true as it darkens you know what you need, you can feel it and you can resolve what you're longing for now morning phantom of the things still yet to be if I could feel you coming closer to me how we vanish into ether, how we're here but we're not all the same but you can't let every heartbreak move you even farther away

Green 04:02
Visions of a silver horizon But you can never quite get there Everything you do try to move you closer Receding into empty air In the roots below the ground In the wind is howling sound One more turn to meet the sky The moment is a sense of vibration A current flowing through everything Every waking thought that emerges from you Blinds you to the flowering It's standing on the edge of a memory That vanishes as soon as it's named Everything you do to try In the roots below the ground In the wind is howling sound One more turn to meet the sky I never knew what a vision life could be Dreams that we hold always vanish to the sea I'll be alright when I keep from holding on To waking dreams and the moment that's gone Visions of a silver horizon But you can never quite get there Everything you do try to move you closer Receding into empty air It feels like a dream of expansion That vanishes from memory awake Everything you do try to hold it tighter Receding every move you make
4.
Matrix Sign 06:06
If you can take away all the dreams of your yesterday and look for a light the glow of the matrix sign A vision in green and white Like an angel in the headlights The curve goes around The life that you found All the time you spent believing All the time it went away When life contracts you don't know why The spirit calls you by-and-by The places you go no one knows And all your hopes are up in smoke To fade in like a photograph The echo of the aftermath By the light of the matrix sign Are the dreams that you left behind The fool on a throne Volition your own You've taken a one-way flight To a view of a nightlight Epoxied in place The look on your face You know what it means To fall in between You know what it means To fall in between
5.
Steel 03:52
In the darkness we will make our way Past the ruins of the old highway To the meeting place we hope to find If any one of us should fall behind The devastation of our old landscape Is the secret to our planned escape The tangled briars made from steel beams Should help us keep from ever being seen Reason left too long ago And madness came to stay If we hope to live our lives There can only be one way Air raid sirens break the silent dawn It gives me comfort that they're not yet gone The shockwave ripples with concussive force It will take more than that to change our course If we never reach the meeting place Tell my darling that I saw her face And by her side is what my heaven means Whatever's waiting past the steel screen We can't hope to stay Don't look back again There can be one way Onward through the day On the precipice of breaking free The kamikaze's flying over me It tears the sky up with a shrieking sound But it's nothing til it hits the ground Glass is shattering and melted steel Inferno blazing up what we concealed To the memory of those who've gone I know I'll see you where our hearts live on

traveling on invisible highways through the light of the waning moon hurtling through the desolation racing the daybreak, soon eyes fixed on the event horizon from which there can be no return pushed on by all the phantom forces the shadow road burns on to keep an open heart despite your isolation to something heaven sent to the open sky you know a new day rises right around the bend another falling star to trace across the night sky if you could reach that far eyes fixed on the event horizon from which there can be no return pushed on by all the phantom forces the shadow road burns on eyes fixed on the event horizon the shadow road burns on riding towards the light, you wouldn't want for grasping fleeing from the night, a little farther now moving through the night as lifetimes slide behind you reaching towards the light, a little brighter now

Golden Hour 03:48
Things are about to change When the night falls In the golden hour Soon the moon calls Time slows down And the light is warm The air is still As the darkness forms The stars break through And the sun escapes As twilight falls On the landscape In the golden hour The day surrenders Things are about to change The moment's splendor Golden hour Memory's power in the frame Soon the moon calls Things are about to change
8.
Silver Moon 04:51
I see your face My saving grace Just a moment's respite in a whirlwind Years burn by into memory And embers glow in the night No one ever could tell me To change the course of my life Release from all the past Don't fear for what will pass Look at everything around you At atomic scale in every fine detail I see your face The sun's embrace Shafts of light are shadowed by the trees' boughs When darkness falls Throughout it all Your presence is the calm within the maelstrom I see your face My saving grace Just a moment's respite in a whirlwind For whom we've lost The rivers crossed -- Let's cross The stars above Know to be loved Is the only answer to the question Keep holding on To what we've found No matter what the cost, we're in the swim now For whom we've lost The rivers crossed

I can feel the sun beating down on me I can feel it burn in the valley around me In the dark of a summer night In the heat of the bare sunlight I can hear the gathering sound I can feel the sky close all around You can take away all the people who know me Can you hope to stay in a world where nothing stays the same

about

Invisible Highways paints a vivid landscape of life's intricacies, from the fleeting moments of hope and transformation to the enduring presence of love and resilience in the face of uncertainty. With poetic lyrics that evoke imagery both celestial and terrestrial, Invisible Highways captures the essence of being human – navigating the shadow roads, embracing the golden hours, and finding solace in the midst of chaos. The songs invite the audience to explore themes of time, connection, and the interplay of light and darkness. This collection of songs is intricately woven together to create an emotional mosaic that resonates with the universal themes of the human experience.

With Invisible Highways, Midnight Lands has transformed from the solo project of Chapel Hill producer/multi-instrumentalist Ben Averch to a duo, adding Austin TX-based guitarist and songwriter Mike Averch. The resulting combination trades in the garage rock of Destroy the World for more echoing, three-dimensional guitar sounds that reach for faraway places and recall shoegaze legends Swervedriver.

Ben and Mike powered the twin guitar attack for 90s-era Boston indie rock band Bison, and their experience working together pays dividends on Invisible Highways. Anchored by Ben as rhythm section and vocalist, the record showcases the brothers’ complementary approaches to songwriting as they alternate tracks as composer and primary guitarist. The resulting variety in sonic approach and composing styles keeps the record fresh and surprising over its ten tracks.
